The Digital Engineering Faculty (DEF) at the University of Potsdam invites applications for a joint professorship under the “Jülich Model” with the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH (HPI) to be filled as soon as possible: Full Professorship (W 3) for Data Systems.

Founded in 1991, the University of Potsdam has firmly established itself in the scientific landscape and has become an outstanding economic factor and development engine for the region. It has a high level of third-party funding, has won several awards for teaching, and has a service-oriented administration and has received awards for being family-friendly. Around 20,000 students and 3,000 employees work at three locations – Am Neuen Palais, Griebnitzsee, and Golm – at one of the most beautifully situated academic institutions in Germany.

As part of their growth initiative, the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and the Digital Engineering Faculty (DEF) are looking for a strong candidate in database systems engineering, data management, and/or data processing with an internationally recognized research profile and an excellent teaching record.

Possible research topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Scalable data processing
  • Parallel and distributed data management
  • Cloud database systems
  • In-memory database management systems, e.g., for enterprise software
  • Compiler techniques for data processing
  • Programming languages for database systems
  • Database systems for ML
  • Self-managing database systems

The candidate should demonstrate excellence in the following aspects:

  • Outstanding publication track record in international conference proceedings and journals, such as PVLDB, SIGMOD, TODS, VLDBJ, CIDR, and ICDE
  • Teaching in data management in practice and theory for undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Supervision at bachelor, master, and Ph.D. level
  • Acquisition of external funding through public and industry grants
  • Transfer of scientific discoveries into widely-used software solutions

The Digital Engineering Faculty and the HPI offer excellent opportunities for researchers to grow their research and teaching skills even further. The joint appointment will be implemented according to the “Jülich Model” with a teaching obligation at the University of Potsdam in accordance with the Brandenburg Higher Education Act (BbgHG).

The hiring process is subject to the requirements set forth in Section 43 subsection 1 sentence 1 no. 1 – 3 and no. 4 letters a and c of the BbgHG. The appointment procedure is conducted in accordance with Section 42 BbgHG.
