Researcher m/f/d in the field of Process Mining and/or Business Process Automation (100%, TV-L E13)

The Chair of Digital Industrial Service Systems (Prof. Dr. Martin Matzner) at the Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg is looking for a research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of Process Mining and/or Business Process Automation (salary group 13 TV-L) with 100% of the regular working hours.

Frist: 31.12.2021

Our Profile

At the Information Systems Chair for DIGITAL INDUSTRIALSERVICE SYSTEMS (Prof. Dr. Martin Matzner), we design models, methods, and tools to conceive and implement technology-based service systems. We put a special focus on industrial applications. In this field, we use techniques of business process management, information modelling, and machine learning. The results achieved contribute directly to solving business and societal challenges.

Your Responsibilities

Your research focus is directed to the area of business process management. In particular, you investigate the analytical part of BPM based on event data – commonly referred to as process mining. Within this context, you develop methods, techniques, algorithms that help organizations to improve their processes based on insights yielded from their data – you make “the data speak.” Furthermore, to act on the insights, we deal with the topic of business process automation, i.e., how organizations can automate process activities for increased efficiency, which is gaining increased attention in the course of digitalization. To sum up, you will be developing innovative frameworks, methods, and tools for supporting business processes. Amongst others, you will, for example, support our efforts in creating a prediction approach for business processes usable for fraud detection or optimized logistics planning.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates (m/f/d) who drive their work independently. Your work will focus on contributing to the industry and research projects of our chair. We expect you to present and publish your work at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Furthermore, research stays with our international partners can be made possible in coordination with the project requirements. In addition, we expect you to provide appropriate support with chair-related teaching (conception and implementation) and administrative duties.

Your Profile

  • You have a university degree (Master or equivalent) in information systems or a related discipline with a grade point average of at least “good,” and you are looking for a Ph.D. position
  • You have a genuine interest (or experience) in Process Mining and/or Business Process Automation
  • You have knowledge about the application of design science-oriented, qualitative, or quantitative research methods
  • You are interested in working together with partners from industry and academics to solve real-world problems
  • You have excellent communication skills in English and ideally also German
  • You have a distinctive team spirit and a confident presence
  • You have (first) experience in a programming language like Java, Python, or similar

The chair offers a modern working and research environment as well as financial support for attending conferences. The salary corresponds to the German pay scale (100% / TV-L E13). The position is limited to three years; an extension is sought. We are committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching and, therefore, encourage qualified female scientists to apply. Severely disabled persons in the sense of the Severely Disabled Persons Act (Schwerbehindertengesetz) will be given preferential consideration given equal professional qualifications and personal suitability.
