The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, in cooperation the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS), has a vacancy for a University Professorship for Responsible AI (W3 oder W2TTW3) to be filled as soon as possible. The candidate will be responsible for the field of “Responsible AI” in research and teaching and is expected to complement the existing expertise at CAIDAS.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, in cooperation the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS), has a vacancy for a University Professorship for Responsible AI (W3 oder W2TTW3) to be filled as soon as possible.

Depending on the qualifications of the applicant, the position will be filled in grade W3 for life, or in grade W2 for a fixed term of 6 years with a tenure-track option to a university professorship in grade W3 for life. In the case of filling the position in grade W2 with tenure-track option, tenure and appointment as a university professor in grade W3 in a civil servant position for life shall only be granted if the university professor has proven him/herself in accordance with the requirements of the university's internal quality assurance concept. The tenure-track procedure can be started at the earliest after a period of employment of two years and six months as a university professor.

The candidate will be responsible for the field of “Responsible AI” in research and teaching and is expected to complement the existing expertise at CAIDAS. The focus should be on the development of novel methods in the field of Responsible AI, as demonstrated by publications at relevant conferences. Outstanding achievements in research and teaching are expected in at least one, and preferably several, of the following areas:

  • Trustworthiness, Fairness, and Privacy of AI methods
  • Adversarial robustness
  • Uncertainty quantification
  • Energy-efficient and resource-constrained AI, sparse training and pruning of Deep Neural Networks
  • Explainable and/or Interpretable AI methods
  • Cognitive AI, causal ML, and mechanistic interpretability of deep neural networks

Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and in interdisciplinary research cooperation is expected.

Teaching responsibilities include contributing to graduate and undergraduate courses in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Computer Science, Games Engineering, Computer Science and Sustainability, Human-Computer Interaction, Computational Humanities, and Aerospace Computer Science, as well as in teacher education programs.

The professorship is part of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDAS, go.uniwue.de/caidas). The future holder of the position is expected to demonstrate a strong willingness to collaborate within the university, particularly with members of the Center. Extensive experience with interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in the application of the above-mentioned methods in sensitive domains such as medicine, is an advantage

Requirements for appointment are a relevant university degree, pedagogical aptitude, special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, as well as additional scientific achievements as detailed in Art. 57 para. 1 sentences 3 and 4 BayHIG. The additional academic achievements should have been made in the field of Responsible AI or in related fields.

In addition, success in national or international third-party funding, extensive publication activities and embedding in an international research environment are expected for the W3 tenured professorship career path.

Pursuant to Art. 60 Para. 3 BayHIG, an appointment to civil service can only be made up to the age of 52. Exceptions are possible in urgent cases.
